Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic

You’ve probably come across epoxy floor coatings, but are they the right choice for your project? Understanding the disparities between epoxy and Polyaspartic flooring is crucial. Here’s some insight to help you determine the best garage floor coating for you.

In terms of aesthetics, particularly with flake flooring, the initial similarities between epoxy and Polyaspartic may not be immediately apparent. However, it’s important to note that neither of these products is merely a paint. Both epoxy and Polyaspartic function as sealers, serving as bonding agents when applied to your concrete substrate. The key distinction lies in their reaction to environmental factors.

Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings offer a cost-effective solution for garage flooring. Initially, epoxy floors exhibit an impressive appearance, especially with thicker coatings. Often touted as a simple do-it-yourself remedy, homeowners can achieve an attractive floor with minimal expenditure, expertise, and tools.

However, longevity is where epoxy falls short. Susceptible to fading, peeling, and cracking due to its limited elasticity and heat resistance, epoxy’s best applications are typically limited to indoor items like furniture.

Over time, exposure to sunlight can cause uneven fading, while the heat from tires may gradually erode or melt the epoxy’s top layer due to its inadequate heat resistance.

Epoxy may be suitable for garage use under specific conditions, such as when extreme temperatures, sunlight, and hot tires are not significant factors – think showroom settings.

Polyaspartic Garage Floor Coatings, on the other hand, offer notable advantages. Despite a quick settling time akin to fast-drying glue, Polyaspartic is the preferred choice for garage floors for several reasons. Its exceptional strength, being over 4 times stronger than epoxy, stands out. Unlike epoxy, which requires frequent maintenance, Polyaspartic is a “set it and forget it” solution.

Thanks to its rapid drying and superior bonding properties, most Polyaspartic applications can be completed in a single day. Utilizing professional equipment ensures faster, safer installation, resulting in a longer-lasting floor that won’t succumb to fading.

Many of our clients opt for Polyaspartic flooring to eliminate the hassle of garage upgrades once and for all.

What You Need to Know - FAQ's

We’re here to put your mind at ease. Here are a few questions that we know you have in mind:

Most 1-day floor systems use only polyaspartic because this product was the best product available to complete a job in one-day due to fast curing times. The downside is polyaspartic is super thin making them more prone to failure when moisture pressure is high or fluctuates overtime.

Our 1-day flooring systems are engineered different. We use the latest technology (as always), which is a high-grade moisture vapor barrier base coat that’s 3-5x thicker, designed to withstand up to 25 lbs of Moisture Pressure (MVT)—the #1 cause of delamination. Better yet, Kongcrete Coatings vapor barrier dries and cures just as fast as polyaspartic, which means you get a best floor as it allows more polymer flake to adhere to our base coat providing a better sheild for your base coat for  enhanced protection – still in 1 day!  Then we fully encapsulate the flake with our premium polyaspartic top coat so you still get all the benefits of a polyaspartic coating like UV resistance, abrasion and chemical resistant. You cant benefit from these features while poly is applied as a base coat. Basically, we give you superior protection at every layer.

Feel free to verify this with any AI platform of your choice!

According to AI-powered research from reputable sources like Concrete Decor, Sherwin-Williams, and Coatings World:

  • Polyaspartic is excellent as a top coat (UV, chemical, abrasion resistance).
  • MVB epoxy base coats are superior for bonding, flake embedment, and moisture control.
  • Most failures in coatings come from moisture intrusion from below.

This is why Kongcrete Coatings delivers our customers the best floors. You get the best product for the base to mitigate moisture. You get a thicker textured polymer flake broadcast as more adhere to the thicker base coat for a better sheild. Then you get the polyaspartic top coat, getting all the benefits of like UV, Chemical and abrasion resistence!

Because their systems aren’t designed to block it. That’s why they don’t warranty against it. Moisture is invisible but devastating to a thin, unprotected system. Its also a more expensive product, but we still maintain our competitive prices against full polyaspartic floors. All of our floors will always have a solid foundation with our Hydrostatic Vapor Barrier base coat to block and lock down moisture.

Concrete floor coatings provide robust durability and exceptional resilience, like our polyaspartic garage floors. These are great for residential garages, walkways, patios, and  even commercial spaces. Our premium garage floor epoxy delivers a protective shield, safeguarding your concrete against chemicals and abrasions. Furthermore, epoxy floors boast a sleek, pristine finish, enhancing aesthetics while simplifying maintenance. based on your goals, we will always provide the best coating solution so you don’t ever have to worry about flooring repairs! We always do right by the customer and in doing so, we never have to return for complaints!

Certainly! The versatility of our epoxy and polyaspartic floor coating systems is unparalleled. You have the freedom to select any color and pattern that suits your preferences. Our dedicated team is committed to making the design process effortless by offering expert recommendations tailored to your needs.

It all comes down to the epoxy flooring you want and most importantly, your preference. A majority of garage floor installations have plenty of traction as we cover the base with a thick textured polymer flake, sealed with an industrial grade polyaspartic clear coat to fully encapsulate the flake. If it rains, you will notice these floors provide the traction needed to prevent slip and falls.

For metallic epoxy floors or solid color floors, these can be slippery if there is an ample about of water or oils that are resting on the surface. However, these floors are generally installed in the interior of a commercial space or home. The good news is, regardless of the floor you choose, we can always provide additives that we mix into the top coats to enhance traction, ensuring you achieve the desired finish. Ultimately, the choice is yours. During our complimentary hassle free consultation, we’ll guide you through our finishes and provide several design to help you make an informed decision.
